7 Tips for a Successful New Year’s Resolution
The new year is here and you decided on the new things you want to change this year. You set these incredible and difficult new goals that you want to accomplish. It is great to have goals and to want to change, but it is important to keep your goals within a realistic range. We all struggle with change, we love to keep things steady and safe. Change is possible as long as it is done in small steps. When you set unrealistic goals, you are setting yourself up for failure and painful disappointment.
Here are some tips:
1- Start by focusing on the things that you achieved this past year and how you worked to reach those changes.
2- Ask yourself what small steps you can take throughout the year that will improve your quality of life, your work or your relationships.
3- Make a plan with small specific steps, small little goals to reach each month such as “I will meditate 5 minutes each Friday in January”. Add a new step for each month.
4- Keep track of you progress and celebrate your accomplishments! Those small steps are the ones that will get you through the journey. Positive reinforcement works like magic.
5- If you fall, get up, dust yourself off and continue. It is natural to find obstacles in your path, but that does not mean you have to begin again, it is just a way to help you refocus and continue your journey.
6- Every day is a good time to start, it does not have to be January 1st or a Monday.
7- Build a support system, someone that can be with you when you fall and to celebrate with you when you succeed.
Finally, remember the wise words of Lao Tzu, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”. Today is a great day to start something new.
